THE MACALLAN CONCEPT BARS
SET DESIGN | 3D MODELS | RENDERINGS
“Hey! Want to design a concept bar for The Macallan?”
“Of course! What’s the brief?”
“Create a way to temporarily transform existing bars to have a Macallan look & feel. It can include light fabrication, decor, branding, or anything else you can think of. Just don’t damage the bars”
“That sounds simple.”
“Oh, and it has to be based on this piece of invitation stationery.”
“There it is. Alright, let’s get to this!”
INSPIRATION
Designing for a brand with 200 years of heritage, plus incorporating the style of a piece of stationery, brought a unique set of challenges. I wanted to highlight the subtle, elegant linear grid and organic wave juxtaposition in a way that would be non-destructive and complement the existing structures. Adding copper accents honors The Macallan’s iconic copper stills and including touches of gold and stone would reinforce the brand’s subtlety and naturalness.
DEVELOPMENT
A key aspect to this design would be bringing to life the subtle patterns without being overbearing with temporary panels. Working with a fabrication shop, we identified the level of refinement achievable routing these patterns into sheets of sintra. Pairing full panels and CAD-cut panels allows the design to flow through the space.
A large copper backlit logo & The Macallan Manor House were utilized to add clean branding elements & a nod to the brand’s heritage. Strategic bottle displays on milk-white plexi glorifiers highlight the product and add a gentle glow. Drawing inspiration from the patterns, contrasting geometric and organic decor items complement the space. Depending on the venue, a copper silhouette of The Macallan still would be placed for a photo opportunity.
