LUKE'S DINER RECREATION
Concept | 3D Models | Renderings
“Hey! I’ve got an assignment for you.”
“Awesome, what’s up?”
“Recreate any environment you want. It could be grounded in fact or fiction. It doesn’t matter, you can choose any place you want.”
“Any place? Like ANY place?”
“Yes, any place. You can hear me, right?”
“Hold my coffee, I got this.”
INSPIRATION
After years of watching Gilmore Girls, one of my (imaginary) happy places has to be Luke’s Diner. The warm atmosphere, large coffee mugs, and eclectic decor - who wouldn’t want to sit there all day watching Stars Hollow out of those large picture windows. This was my opportunity to honor the show I love so much, by recreating Luke’s Diner. The challenge of delving into such an intricate set design was both exciting and formidable but I rolled up my modeling sleeves and got to work.
DEVELOPMENT
When it came to recreating Luke’s, I have to profess my profound respect for the set designers. The level of precision in this design was impressive. After poring over stills and rewatching episodes (for educational purposes, of course) I started piecing everything together.
The structure of this set is straightforward; however, the beauty is in the details. Using reference photos, I modeled signs, furniture, and furnishings that brought in the show’s unique aesthetic. Focusing on small elements like the tables’ metal trim and the bead-board for the exterior lent authenticity to the final rendering. Filling the space with welcoming and delightful decor really assisted in bringing the viewer into this world.
